Pet Suitability:
Quiet and pleasant parrot; initially shy. May be alarmed with new objects. New birds susceptible to stress and disease, particularly fungal infections. Strict hygiene necessary due to liquid diet. May be housed with other members of genus Loriculus.

Housing:
Outdoor planted enclosure (in warm climates) length 1.5m (5 ft) with shelter, for 1 or 2 pairs. If housed inside, aviary with well drained, concrete floor and tiled surround.

Diet:
Fruits such as apple and pear, cut into halves, not chopped; pomegranate, guavas and cactus fruits; berries such as: blackberries and red currants; small seed mix such as: canary, soaked oats; spray millet; sponge cake and nectar; insectivorous mixture; mealworms, well-cleaned maggots and ant pupae.

Enrichment:
Enjoys chewing so provide plenty of bird-safe, unsprayed flowering, willow, elder or saskatoon branches; provide overhead misters or shallow water bowls for bathing.

Nest Box Size:
Provide ivy for use as nest material, as well as wood shavings. Vertical box 11cm x 11cm x 15cm (4.5 x 4.5 x 6 in).

Planted walk-in aviary,minimum length 1.5m (5 ft); outdoors if in warm climate, with small attached shelter.

Diet:
Fruits such as: apple, pear, pomegranate, guavas where available, the large fruits halved and not chopped; berries such as: blackberries, redcurrants; small seeds such as: canary, millet; soaked oats; spray millet; sponge cake and nectar; insectivorous food; clean mealworms, maggots and ant pupae; complete pellet if taken.

Enrichment:
House with other individuals, provide daily bathing bowls. Provide unsprayed flowering branches, and willow and elder branches to strip.

Nest Box Size:
Nest log 15cm x 40cm (6 x 15.6 in).
